Thicker gauge wire means a bigger splice and a bigger risk of it chafing against a bracket or panel edge. This 6 mm clear heatshrink wraps over the joint and shrinks to 3 mm with a quick pass of a heatgun or even a gas burner. You can still see the wire through the clear sleeve, so you're not guessing whether the connection is solid.
