Derwent Watersoluble Sketching Pencil 8B – Darker Marks, Richer Washes

You need depth. The 4B is fine for mid-tones, but your shadows want more weight and your washes want a richer pull. This is the soft one in the Derwent Watersoluble range. Round barrel, graphite-coloured lead, wide strip. Lay it down dry for dark, confident sketch lines. Add water and it opens into a deeper, softer wash than the harder grades give you. One pencil covers your darkest values without a second tool in hand. Pick it up and get back to drawing
