Your DVD player or set-top box is bottlenecking the sound you actually paid for. This DAC kit takes the digital signal — coaxial S/PDIF or either of two TOSLINK optical inputs — and converts it to analogue with a signal-to-noise ratio of -108dB and THD under 0.0018%. That's high-end CD player territory, sitting on your shelf. Plug in your DVD player, computer, DVR, or any linear PCM source, run stereo RCA out to your amp, and stop settling for the built-in converter's muddy output. Heads up: there are two SMD chips on the board, so you'll need comfortable SMD soldering skills. You'll also need the KC-5418 PSU and a toroidal transformer — the kit is short-form (PCB, I/O, DAC, switch, and on-board components only)
