This Jaycar folding shovel solves that. Folds down to 24cm so it lives in a glovebox or gear bag. Unfolds to 62cm when you need to actually dig. The blade is durable steel with a serrated edge for cutting small roots or stripping bark. There's a 15cm pick on the back for breaking up hard ground or prying rocks.

At just over 1kg, most people in the family can swing it without straining their back. The included carry case keeps it clean and stops it rattling around the back seat.
